*Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) refers to the collection of re-experiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal symptoms that persist for more than one month after exposure to a traumatic event. Sleep disturbances including nightmares and insomnia characterize PTSD.
*Sleep disturbances are often resistant to first-line treatments of PTSD
*This study uses two treatment arms, a medical, and a behavioral. Prazosin, an alpha-1 antagonist, is a promising pharmacological strategy for reducing nightmares and insomnia. Also, preliminary data suggest that an evidence-based behavioral intervention aimed at reducing sleep disruption, increasing sleep consolidation, and reducing nightmares can also be efficacious.
